Historical Recount Diary in Sydney

Historical Recount

Purpose : To inform the reader of what occurred, when.

There are 3 main parts to a recount :

1. Introduction/Orientation :

Tell the reader what you are going to write about. This is done by giving
some background information on the subject.

What - what happened
Who - who was involved
When - when all this took place.
Where - where these events took place

For a 300 word recount this will be about 2-3 sentences.

2. The Sequence of Events :

Retell the events in the order in which they happened.
Language features :
Past tenses - as all recounts are about something that happened in the past
use the appropriate past tenses.

Time markers - words to tell the reader how the events are linked
e.g then, after that, at the same time as, in 1980.

3. Conclusion/Re-Orientation

As the events have just been retold they don't need to be summarised in this section.
To finish off the recount write about-

How - these events fit into the world as we know it today.
Why - these events are worth remembering
